Salvation through Quality

Ivan Ilyin We trust and are confident that the hour will come when Russia will rise from disintegration and humiliation and begin an epoch of new development and greatness. But it will revive and blossom only after Russian people understand that they have to search for salvation in quality. Scrutinize the history of Russia, the fate of its people, ponder upon its wreck and humiliation and you will see, that all its basic difficulties came from an over-emphasis on volume and quantity. Throughout the centuries all our troubles, all our risks came from a destiny imposed on us by a seemingly inexhaustible abundance - an abundance of space, tribes and people. We did not take the time to develop this abundance, to seize it, to convert it from its latent force into completion as a qualitative blossoming...

Yes, in our recent history we did not have not enough time or force focused on quality; on the quiet and concentrated culture; on cultivation and creative registration of our natural talent; on education and strengthening of national character; on creation of the intensive, technically perfect agriculture and crafts; on improvement of political and organization life. And consequently almost everything, that we created, we didn’t create it using our culture, but using our primitive, natural talent. Whereas western European often made much of small gifts; Russia turned even big gifts and great natural endowments into ashes...

Investigate the destiny of Russia; ponder upon its wreck and humiliation and you will understand that to Russian people there is only one outcome and one salvation - returning to quality and its culture. Because quantitative ways were pursued, suffered and then exposed, now the quantitative illusions that were observed before our eyes are disintegrated in the end. It is necessary to release the qualitative forces of Russian creatively!

To prepare for the restoration of Russia – means that first of all we must prepare ourselves for quality service to our native land; prepare our character, reason, and feelings with a strong-will idea. This idea is “Russian Quality.” We are all convinced that a time will come when Russia arises from disintegration and humiliation and begins an epoch of renewed greatness. This new epoch will be characterized by its atmosphere of this strong-willed idea – Russian Quality.

Ivan ILYIN

Russia is about to join the World Trade Organization. For the most our companies it means the worsening of competitive surrounding: foreign produce and services, which now feel free on the Russian market, will be even easier. In reality it is an issue of survival of our businesses, since customers will have a bigger choice, and a customer always chooses the best for his price. Consequently, it is necessary not only to manufacture, but to manufacture better and at lower price, not only to use world best technologies and management, but, what is the most important, to exceed them.

The Economic development of Russia without superior quality produce and services is the movement to nowhere. We can triple, not double the GDP, but if it is due to manufacturing of noncompetitive goods, at best we shall remain in the middle of the last century and as before shall rely on the gradually running dry “oil pipe”.

What to do under such circumstances? There is only one answer to this practical question: all together and every individual should strive to business excellence. In other words, should strive to the state-of-the-art organizational management and results based on continuous performance improvement and innovations implementation.

There are various ways of achieving excellence in the world practice. One of them is benchmarking. Benchmarking is continuous and systematic search and realization of the best practices, which leads to superior performances and change of the corporate culture of companies and organizations based on ideology of corporate-stile management. Benchmarking is a systematic and continuous measurement process; a process of continuously comparing and measuring an organisation's business processes against business leaders anywhere in the world to gain information that will help the organisation to take action to improve its performance. In the last years benchmarking is widely used in business, since it helps to improve business processes quickly and at lower costs, to perceive performance of leading companies and to achieve even better results.

From the above-stated it is clear that the benchmarking implementation in Russia is urgent and vital. Our new companies and young promising managers should not “invent a wheel”. They must take all the best, perceive the existing experience and on that basis achieve business excellence and superiority of produce and services.

In fact on spontaneous basis the benchmarking is always being used in our country. While contacting each other, managers of various levels share their experiences, compare it and rather often use other’s achievements in their practice. The experience show that the communication between colleagues gives the most valuable ideas and knowledge and leads to implementation of new management and software products, to using of new technologies.
But the efficacy of a company cannot be dependant on personal relations of its managers, and benchmarking cannot be implemented on one-off spontaneous basis. It must be continuous, purposeful and science-based process conducted by professionals and aimed at the implementation of business innovations and improvements. What is the most essential for Russia at this stage of development – this process must include the leading foreign companies and corporations.

The independent not-for-profit structure – Russian Organization for Quality (ROQ) took over the organisation of such process. Within its Business Excellence Department the Russian National Benchmarking Centre (RNBC) was founded. Its aim is to systematize and disseminate advanced principles of excellence and technique of their implementation, to organize an exchange of experience between Centre-members in Russia and abroad, and to render them practical assistance in the implementation of this experience.

The RNBC intends to develop its activities and branches in the Russian Federation and the CIS-countries with the wide use of potentialities of international union of benchmarking professionals – the Global Benchmarking Network.

The RNBC Mission is to introduce benchmarking methods and to develop the understanding in Russian business not to adhere to one method of business excellence, but continuously learn and exchange practices. There is a need to spend much intellectual effort to activate participation of Russian companies in benchmarking, to study and make use of the best practices from other companies and organizations.

The RNBC Vision is to become one of the internationally recognised leaders in benchmarking and in activity of training, introduction and exchanging of best practices and methods of quality management.

The RNBC Ideology is based on introduction of civilized forms and methods of produce and services competition on the Russian market and in the CIS economic area in the interests of manufactures, customers, and society as a whole.
